Spending more time on Canva than you expected?
As someone who works with solopreneurs and small business owners daily, I understand the significant time and energy required for content creation. Between running a business, managing clients, and keeping up with marketing, creating scroll-stopping visuals can easily eat up your entire day.
At Red Glasses Marketing House, we use Canva constantly. After years of creating templates and visuals for clients, we’ve gathered some favorite time-saving tips that help you design faster, stay consistent, and enjoy the process. These minor tweaks and time-saving tricks can make a big difference in how quickly and confidently you create content.
If you want to make Canva work harder for you, not the other way around, these 22 tips will help you create faster, design better, and spend less time second-guessing your visuals.
Design Smarter, Not Harder
1. Match Design Elements with Image Colors
One of the quickest ways to make your design look professional is by pulling colors directly from your photos. This creates an instantly cohesive look.
Simply click the element you want to recolor, select the color box, and choose a color from your image, followed by the “+” icon. It’s subtle yet powerful.
2. Don’t Sleep on Canva Templates
Canva’s built-in templates are a fantastic starting point. They’re invaluable when you’re short on time or don’t know where to begin with a design.
But if you’ve ever found yourself endlessly scrolling for something that fits your content or industry, you’re not alone. That’s precisely why we created our CALMING Social Media Subscription—to simplify the content creation process and save you time.
3. Save Your Designs as Templates
Working with a team or sharing designs with clients? Save your design as a template by clicking Share → Template Link. This lets others use your layout without affecting your original file, which is a total lifesaver if you collaborate a lot.
4. Set Up Your Brand Hub
Keep your logo, brand colors, and fonts saved in Canva’s Brand Hub. This ensures everything you design stays on-brand without having to re-enter hex codes or hunt down fonts every time.
5. Create Brand Templates
If you reuse certain designs frequently (such as promotional graphics or quote templates), save them as Brand Templates. You’ll find them all in one place, eliminating the need to recreate the wheel every week.
6. Upload Your Own Fonts
Your brand personality lives in your font choice. If Canva’s font library doesn’t fit your style, upload your own under the Brand Kit. Once it’s in, you can use it in any design—and even set it as your default.
7. Apply Styles in One Click
Want to try different color palettes or switch fonts quickly? Go to the Styles tab and play around. With just a click, you can apply your brand colors or experiment with Canva’s pre-made palettes. This is perfect for quick mood shifts in your design.
8. Use Text Backgrounds for Visibility
If your text is getting lost on a busy image, click your text → Effects → Background. You can adjust the color, transparency, and corner radius. It’s a super easy way to keep things legible while looking stylish.
Edit Like a Pro
9. Remove Backgrounds Easily
Need to isolate your subject? Use the Background Remover tool under Edit Image. It works surprisingly well and saves you from using other apps or software.
10. Lock Elements in Place
Once something is perfectly placed, right-click and choose Lock. This keeps it from moving while you edit the rest of the design (especially useful when working with layered graphics).
11. Align Elements Without Guesswork
Select multiple elements, then hit Position to align them top, center, bottom—you name it. This feature instantly makes your design feel cleaner and more intentional.
12. Use the Tidy-Up Feature
Spacing can make or break a design. Select your elements instead of manually adjusting each item and hit Tidy Up. Canva will evenly space everything, vertically or horizontally. Magic.
13. Select Hidden Layers
Need to grab something hidden behind other layers? Hold down Command (or Ctrl) and click through the elements until you hit the one you want—no need to move everything out of the way.
Time-Savers You’ll Love
14. Learn the Shortcuts
Once you know them, they become second nature. A few faves:
- Command + D to duplicate
- Command + G to group
- Shift + Command + G to ungroup
- Command + A to select all
- T for text, C for circle, R for rectangle, L for line
15. Bulk Create in Seconds
Are you creating lots of quote cards, testimonials, or promos? Use Bulk Create. Upload your text into a spreadsheet, connect it to your template, and Canva will automatically generate individual graphics for each entry—a total game-changer.
16. Use Canva Mockups
Want to show off your design on a phone, laptop, or T-shirt? Use Mockups. Select your image and choose from a wide range of mockup templates.

17. Build Custom Charts
Head to Elements → Charts, select your style, and enter your data. You can even match chart colors and fonts to your brand. This is perfect for presentations or infographics.
Publish & Export Like a Boss
18. Schedule Social Media Posts from Canva
No need to download and re-upload to every platform. Simply click Share, followed by the Schedule icon. Pick a date and time, select a channel, add your caption, and schedule your post. It’s simple, especially for quick content drops.
19. Export with Transparent Backgrounds
Are you designing a logo or sticker-style graphic? When you download, select PNG or SVG and check the ‘Transparent Background’ option. There will be no white boxes around your design—just clean, pro-looking files.
20. Use the Content Planner
Keep your content organized with Canva’s Content Planner. You can visually plan and schedule content all in one place. It’s not a full-blown scheduling platform (yet), but great for mapping out posts ahead of time.
Unlock Canva’s AI Power
21. Explore Magic Studio Tools
Canva’s AI features are surprisingly useful:
- Magic Write – Helps with captions, headlines, and copy ideas
- Magic Edit – Edit photos in ways that used to require Photoshop
- Magic Grab + Text – Pull text or objects from photos
- Magic Expand – Expand the edges of your image creatively
These tools save tons of time—and give you creative superpowers.
22. Expand Your Visual Options with Photo Apps
Canva already offers a great selection of high-quality images, but if you want to broaden your choices, try exploring the Pexels and Pixabay apps inside Canva. These free integrations offer access to a wider range of stunning visuals, ideal for finding the perfect image to complement your message and mood.
